An academic Line Array's acoustic energy theoretically shall decrease by 3dB every time the distance doubles. To behave as a true Line Array the source shall be 4 to 8 times longer than the lowest frequency reproduced. At 100 Hz a Line Array would have a 20 metres length in order to fulfil the above criteria otherwise the system behaves like a point source with 6dB to 10dB decrease in pressure level each time the distance from the source is doubled. This brief introduction has not been mentioned to discount the Line Array's advantages, but just because we all undergo the rules of physics that limit our choices. These rules obviously apply to each Line Array type and brand.
It should even be noted that "academic" Line Arrays have just one optimum arrangement, depending on the relation between the curvature angle of each module and the shape of the waves that emerge from the HF areas. Since every line array module is identical, optimum coupling can be achieved only by radial shaped configurations. Real flat wave generators perform best into zero degrees position and phase cancellation effects appear into one degree position, increasing by augmenting the curvature angle. This is the main reason behind the fact that most line arrays do not have HF projection at all. In fact it is not easy to perfectly couple waves as long as 21mm (16KHz) if 180° out of phase means a difference of 10.5mm. Just pin handles tolerance for flying the modules shall allow 3 mm clearance. Line arrays are precision devices.
Considering the difficulties inherent in Line Array technology the L series offers exceptional fidelity and ease of use. DSP programming is almost related to repositioning drivers for perfect time synchronization while EQ's are necessary only for reactance compensation (width of the cabinets).
